Cookie Sheet Advent Calendar

My kids love playing with this calendar. My 4 year old loves to put the new magnet on each day. This is a fun project to make because you can use your imagination to make up the magnets. Some things I used were:
  • little mirrors
  • dominos
  • small ornaments like sleds, stars and drums that are meant to go on miniature trees
  • die cuts
  • poker chips
  • glass disks
  • vintage buttons
  • flower scrapbook embellishments
  • game pieces
  • printed scrapbook paper
  • pieces of metal
  • pictures

If you want to make this fun project, here's what I did:
  • Get a cookie sheet. {You can get a new one or go to Goodwill and pick up an old one. Also, the Dollar Store has cookie sheets - they are a small size, but work great for this project. If you get a new one that has non-stick surface, you will need to sand it down so your paint will stick.}
  • Drill two holes at the top of the cookie sheet for your ribbon to go through. I used  regular drill. It is hard, but if you apply pressure it will work. Make sure to drill on a surface that can get dinged up. I did it on my garage workbench. You might have some sharp edges and you can file those down with a metal file.
  • Spray paint your cookie sheet. I did mine white, but black, red or green would be cute. Or maybe silver or gold?
  • Pick out 2 pieces of scrapbook paper that coordinate. One will be for the top of the calendar and the other will be at the bottom. You also need a plain piece of paper that will have the actual calendar grid on it.
  • Once your cookie sheet is dry, bring it to your work space and measure it width and lentgth. This is how you will figure out how big to cut your scrapbook paper. Each cookie sheet is different, so I can't give you exact dimensions. You will want a pretty square surface for the grid section of the calendar. So if your cookie sheet is 8 inches wide, then it will look good to make the grid paper 8 inches by 8 inches. This will also give you room at the top and bottom to put your coordinating paper for your lettering.
  • Once you have figured out the dimensions for your grid paper, cut it out and then figure out your dimensions for each day. You will divide the total amount of width and length by 5 to get these dimensions. Now take a pencil and ruler and measure the dimensions out and draw lines to get the grid. You may need to make corrections, that is why you should use a pencil. Once you have the correct dimensions, go over the lines with permanent marker.
  • Now cut out the other paper. I made the top a little longer than the bottom so it wouldn't be so matchy-matchy, but you can do whatever you like.
  • Lay it out on the cookie sheet. Once it looks right, use Mod Podge and glue it down. I went over the top with mod podge too to protect the paper so it will last. If you haven't ever used Mod Podge, be careful. You need to put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the back of each paper and another on the acutal cookie sheet. Then lay the paper down and smooth all of the bubbles out. It works best to go in small sections. Start at one end of the paper and go diagonally across to the other side. Keep smoothing the bubbles out. NOTE: If Mod Podge sounds too scary, you can use spray adhesive and then spray a coat of clear sealant over the top to protect it.
  • I put the Christmas die cut letters on right at the end of the Mod Podging - adding a thin layer over the top of the letters.
  • Now while your paper is drying, get out all of the embellishments to make the magnets. I lay it all out the way it is going to go on the board before I put any of the numbers on the magnets. This way you can see how it looks and make any changes that you want to without having to take the numbers off. You will want the shapes to be separate: no circles next to each other or anything that is the same color together.
  • Once you have all of the magnets laid out they way they will go on the calendar, start putting them together. Then put the numbers on last. For the numbers I used a few different methods to make them so they wouldn't all be the same. I printed a bunch of numbers off in different fonts and different colors. If you go to 1001fonts.com, you will find tons of fun fonts. They also have many many Christmas and holiday fonts which are fun for this project. I also used a labeler to print off some numbers, some stickers and I wrote some numbers with a sharpie.
  • When you have the numbers on you can add the magnets to the back of each number. I used a super glue.
  • Now put your ribbon through the hoels and tie it into a bow.
  • Another note: Depending on how you decide to you use your Advent Calendar, you can put all of the magnets on and then take one off a day until there are no more, or start with a blank surface. Since it is magnetic, you can keep the magnets you are not using on the back of the cookie sheet so they will not get lost.
  • Enjoy your new Advent Calendar!

I Can Make That -- Burlap Magnet Boards

Just A Girl is having a really fun party today. She has asked people to come up with fun, handmade ideas for gift giving this year.

I made these burlap magnet boards. You can make them in any size or shape.

If you would like to make one, this is how:

  1. Go down to Home Depot or your local hardware store. Pick out some plywood. I had the guys down there cut it to the lengths I wanted. And guess what? They did it for FREE!
  2. Go into the roofing department of that store and get some sheet metal. Mine came in a huge roll, but you can buy smaller portions. Make sure that you have some metal scissors. You can also get these at the hardware store.
  3. Take your cut plywood and wrap some batting around it. Now cut your burlap to wrap around the board. I made mine so that it would cover the entire board - front and back.
  4. Take your heavy duty staple gun and stretch the burlap tightly over the board - staple it together. I folded the seams under so the back has a finished look.
  5. Get out your measuring stick, measure around the outside of your board 1/2 inch (or whatever you like). Make a line all the way around with a pencil. This will make your upholstery tacks straight all the way around. Now go back around and mark off the spacing of where your tacks are going to go. On one of the boards I did 1 inch apart and the other I did 2 inches apart. I think they both look good.
  6. Now you need to measure the sheet metal. I used a t-square to make sure it was completely straight. You want a little space for your burlap to show and also leave room for the upholstery tacks that go around the whole thing. Figure out what that measurement is and then make a line with pencil on the metal. Cut along that line with your metal shears - make sure to keep a steady pressure on the scissors so the metal doesn't ripple.
  7. Now pound in the upholstery tacks with a hammer.
  8. Now hot glue the sheet metal onto your board. Make sure to use plenty of glue. One nice thing is that the burlap holds the glue really well. You also want to be sure to get the edges really well so the edges are glued down.
  9. Now take some ribbon or whatever you have to cover up the edges. And actually, if you cut straight and the edges look good you may not have to do this step. Hot glue the ribbon on to the center of the edge of the metal. Try to make it as straight as you can. I put a dot of glue at the top of each side and then put a line of glue all the way down the side and then quickly stretched the ribbon all the way over the top so it was straight and then put it down onto the glue. This way there were no gaps.
  10. Now you can make your embellishment on the top. On one of the boards I made a big flower and glued the edges under. The other board I cut a long strip of skinny burlap and then wrapped that around to make flowers. I finished it off by adding a special button to the center of each flower.
  11. And you are done!

FMM: Favorite Scents

It's Friend Makin' Monday! I haven't been able to participate in the last few, and I really missed it. So I'm so happy to be able to join in this week over at darling Amber's blog. Her question this week is:

What are your favorite candles/scents?

I love burning candles in the Fall and Winter.  Some of my favorite scents are:

Pumpkin

cinnamon

anything apple

I love Salt City candles. Some scents I want to try are:

Cafe Paris
The rich smell of the chocolate, the sweet smell of the caramel, the strong aroma of the vanilla beans all combined together to give you the energizing scent of an espresso.

Oatmeal Raisin
Sweet, fragrant and wonderfully comforting, the smell of freshly-baked oatmeal raisin cookies is a happy greeting to friends and family. A heady mix of spices and wholesome grains with just a touch of creamy vanilla, cookies are always welcome

I have always wondered about those no burn candles. Have you ever tried those? And what are your favorite brands/scents of candles? Go over to Amber's to join in the fun!

And Happy Birthday to my darling sister Ashley! This is a picture of her with her sweet little baby. Aren't they cute? Have a great day Ashley!!!

Have a great day!

Tutorial: how to make Burlap Flowers and Embellishments

I had a few people ask me how I made the embellishments on the burlap magnetic boards. So I thought it might be fun to make up a tutorial showing a few different flowers and embellishments that you make using burlap.

  • Cut out a large square of fabric approximately 2 times bigger than the size of the flower you want to make. Trim the edges of the square so they are not pointy.
  • Put the material on your project with the center of the material in the center of where you want your flower to go. If you are making this to sew on something or to make into a pin or brooch, put the material on your work surface.
  • Tuck the ends of the square under on all sides until it looks more like a circle. Hot glue the ends to your project or baste the ends under using a needle and thread.
  • Now make folds in the circle and tuck the excess material into the folds so it looks like flower petals. Hot glue or baste those parts together. {If you are sewing this flower, make sure to turn it over while you baste so the stitching doesn't show.}
  •  Take a bit of twine and find the center of it. Put the center of the twine in the center of the flower and make some loops around until it looks pleasing to you. Either hot glue or stitch the twine on to your flower.
  • Put your beautiful button in the middle of your flower. Either hot glue it on or stitch it on. If you are hot gluing the flower on, press down on the button so it sinks into the flower - this will make the rest of the flower puff out.
  • If you are making this as a brooch, cut out a circle of felt and hot glue or sew the finished flower onto the felt and attach a fastener to the felt.
 Puffy Flower

 {puffy flower with leaves on top}

You can make this is in any size you like.
  • Cut out a circle of burlap that is approximately twice as big as you would like the finished product to be.
  • Tuck the ends of the burlap under and either baste by hand with needle and thread or hot glue onto whatever project you are making. Do this all the way around the circle until all the ends are tucked under and secured.
  • Now take another piece of burlap and cut out a circle that is about the same size as the finished circle that you just made. Fray the edges of that circle.
  • Attach the new circle to the one that has the edges turned under. Attach it with either glue gun or needle and thread depending on what type of project you are making.
  • Now attach your button using glue or thread. If you are using glue, press down so the button sinks into the flower.
  • When the button is attached, fold up the burlap flower on top of the button and scrunch for a moment. This will make the burlap wavy so it is not so flat.
Multi-layered Flower with Big Leaves

  • Cut out about 5 round burlap circles in 5 sizes from large to small. Fray the edges of the circles.
  • Attach those circles together from largest to smallest with the smallest being on top. Hot glue them or sew them.
  • Cut a length of burlap about 3 inches in width and about a foot long. Fold it in half and then iron it.
  • Once ironed, cut out four leaves, with the seam in the middle of each leaf.
  • Take those leaves and gather them in a bunch. Hot glue or sew the leaves together.
  • Attach the circles to the leaves using hot glue or thread.

Row of flowers

  • Cut out a very long length of burlap cut very thin in width. I did 1 inch. Using about a two foot section, put the end of the burlap length in the center and then loop sections of the burlap ribbon one over another, meeting in the middle each time.
  • Once you have the flower looking the way you like, either hot glue it together or sew it together in the center of the flower.
  • Attach the button using your glue gun or thread.
  • Do this as many times as you like to make a bunch of flowers.
Alternate version of Row of Flowers

  • Take a very thin length of burlap - 1 inch in width.
  • Start with the end of the length and loop big sections out making a fan.
  • Attach it all together using a glue gun or thread.
  • Add your button.

 Yo Yo burlap flowers

  • Cut out three different sizes of burlap or whatever fabric you would like to use.
  • Fold the edges under and baste with a needle and thread. For the burlap I used a double length of thread for strength.
  • Once you go all the way around the flower, take the thread and pull to gather the material into a circle.
  • Tie the thread off tightly to retain the closed shape.
  • Do this to all of the circles.
  • Attach the yo yo's to your project.

I hope these help anyone who wants to make burlap embellishments. I have a really fun project I am posting tomorrow AND I am going to be guest blogging tomorrow - so tune in!

And I also wanted to say that I am so sorry if I haven't been around to see you this week! I am in charge of our church's "Super Saturday", which is a big craft day for about 60 women. I am in charge of the crafts so I have been running around all week getting things ready.  So next week should be much less busy!

I appreciate every comment and I am so grateful that you took the time out of your busy week to stop by!

Thanksgiving at My House

Thanks for all of your comments and ideas for Ella's "Pink & Chinese" bedroom! I would love to get your thoughts on another dilemma.

Did I mention that I'm having Thanksgiving at my house this year? I am really excited. I have been thinking about it and planning it out for a few weeks now. I know the table scape is going to involve burlap. But I would like to off-set the burlap with an elegant centerpiece. I have been looking around for some ideas and inspiration. Here is what I have come up with so far:

What do you think? Are any of these your favorites? Or have you seen something fabulous that you could share with me? Thanks so much!
Have a Great Day!
